WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED?

A passport with at least 6 months left, a photocopy of the passport, a valid driver’s license if you plan to rent a car.

HOW DO I COVER EXPENSES?

There is an ATM machine in Samara and a bank that will change $ at the official rate. Dollars are usually accepted at most establishments, but in smaller denominations—$100 and $50 are not usually received. Most major credit cards are accepted at larger establishments, cash only at smaller ones. Traveler’s checks are not the best idea.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?

There is a pharmacy in Samara, and generic medicines are sold everywhere (same stuff as US supermarkets and drugstores), but any prescription medicine should be brought with you. Bring plenty of sunblock and maybe some repellent. Casual clothes and swimwear, maybe something a little nicer for a special dinner out.

WHAT ABOUT GROCERIES?

Its a good idea to work up general menu (that the majority approves of) to know what you have to buy and then a few alternatives in case you can’t find something you need. There are two supermarkets in Nicoya, two smaller supers in Samara and several minimarkets in Carrillo, one particularly well stocked with imported items. Fish, shrimp and lobster (in season) can be purchased frequently on the way to Samara.

HOW DO I GET TO THE HOUSE?

There is paved access and fairly well signposted roads from the two international airports in Costa Rica. There is an airstrip for domestic flights and light aircraft. Or if you rather, we can help you contract a van to pick you at the airport.

PHONE CALLS AND INTERNET

Long distance phone calls can not be made directly from the house, so you may want to bring a calling card (ATT, MCI, Sprint, etc.) or buy a pre-paid calling card from our office. Calling collect is another way to make long distance calls. There is internet connection at the house.
